I have always loved picking out kids room furniture with my daughter. It’s not that furniture shopping is my idea of fun. I have always hated shopping of all kinds, and shopping for furniture is no exception. It is just that she gets so excited about kids furniture. I’m always so happy to see the pleasure in her eyes.
I guess I understand why children’s furniture can be so exciting to young ones. It always seems to indicate a right of passage. When adults buy a piece of furniture, it is because they have been saving up and looking for a long time, and have found just the right item. Kids furniture, however, signifies something different. It is even more important to them than your new couch is to you. You see, new kids furniture usually means that the child is grown up a little bit. She will be too big for her chair, or too tall for that bed she has been sleeping in. When she gets new kids furniture, she knows she is one step closer to that magical world of adulthood.
I like to take this a step further in my family. When I get kids furniture for my daughter, I usually make it a reward. Secretly, I know that she is getting kids furniture because she is growing up, but she doesn’t know that. I will set some goals for her. I will make her read a certain number of books, or do her chores every day for a month or two.
I think picking out kids furniture is one of my daughter’s favorite things in the world. She is at that age where color is still fascinating. She sees the bedsheets with their bright vibrant colors, and her eyes practically water. She loves new rocking chairs best of all. She will sit in her kids rocking chair for hours, talking to her dolls and playing mommy. Children’s furniture, you see, is part of her magical make-believe world. It helps her to imagine that she has her own house. Sometimes it is in a magic kingdom, but just as often it is a normal house like we have. The only difference is that she is the adult there.

You may want to go out and choose your children’s furniture based on looks alone, but that is never a good idea. My sister in law learned this the hard way when she bought a crib by looks, but had to get rid of it because she found out it was not safe. You don’t have to worry though, as her case was not a common one. At least not today anyway. Most companies make sure they are building items that are safe for babies and children alike. You can get safe and beautiful things if you take your time while shopping.
You should pay extra attention to safety issues when you are buying children’s furniture for babies. They are helpless, and they depend on you to watch out for them. One of the first things you should do is look up recalled items online. Though stores are required to immediately pull recalled items, sometimes things can happen. They may not get to it quick enough, or something may be missed. Some stores may not get the notice right away, and that means you could end up buying recalled children’s furniture.
You should take your recall list with you so you can make sure that you are not buying something defective. Once you have found things you like, and you know they are not recalled, you can do your own safety check. Make sure crib slats are close together, and that dressers and bookshelves are safe. Some come with ways to attach to the walls, and those are always great ones to get. Children love to climb, and they may pull something over on themselves. You also want to be sure the children’s furniture you have chosen does not have sharp edges and funny things sticking out that can hurt your children.
You may also find some great deals on children’s furniture if you shop around online. You should use the same rules when checking these things out on any website. Make sure none are recalled and they appear to be safe. You might not be able to tell until they arrive at your home, but you can tell a lot by looking through photographs. You will have to pay for shipping, but with some great savings you can find online, you may not pay much more. Along with that, you get everything delivered right to your door. Not bad for a days work!
